Sound of the week

In Nursery we learn a new sound a week and follow the Read Write Inc programme, which the children will continue to use throughout their time at Howes. To reinforce the children's learning of each sound each child will take turns to take home the sound tin. We ask that you try and find as many words as they can that begin with the sound of the week. At this stage it is more important that you teach your child the sound each letter makes and not the letter name.

Here are the sounds we will be covering in Nursery during the Spring Term

m  mmmmmmountain, keep lips pressed together hard
a   a-a-a, open mouth wide as if to take a bite of an apple
s   sssssnake, keep teeth together and hiss – unvoiced)
d   tap tongue behind the teeth
t    tick tongue behind the teeth – unvoiced
i     i-i-i, make a sharp sound at the back of the throat – smile
p    make distinctive p with lips – unvoiced
n    nnnnnnet, keep tongue behind teeth
g    make soft sound in throat
o    o–o-o, push out lips, make the mouth into o shape
c    make sharp click at back of throat
k    make sharp click at back of throat
